Our Vision
- The Poetrywala Foundation is envisaged as a discerning and hospitable space in both digital and real-world mode for practitioners and readers of poetry and translation from India.
- It is a space devoted to and springing from a hybridity of practice, one that encourages – through translation – multilingual engagement in a spirit of community and collegiality, allowing for the free dissemination of informed and aware criticism of poetry, translation and its various practices.
- The Foundation recognizes that the poet inhabits a multiplicity of roles: writer, translator, editor, theorist, researcher, archivist, activist – even publisher. What binds them all is the poet as witness through the word.
- The Foundation shall stand / write / fight against amnesia / mediocrity / superficiality / ignorance (of cultural, literary and political referents) / indifference / lack of rigor.
- The Foundation shall promote an active understanding of the practise of poets and translators, relating to those concurrent and prior, with an aim to provide context and a matrix within which future generations can situate / locate / read / re-read poetries being written in India today.
- In so doing, the Foundation will actively record and reflect on our own time, on our own terms, offering a birds’-eye view of the ‘poetry scene’ from the turn of the millennium and onwards.
- All the participants of the Foundation – poets, translators, artists, readers, writers, donors, well-wishers, partners, cultural organisers – will work towards the promotion of poetry, and in so doing, will promote humanism, internationalism, freedom of expression and solidarity between cultures and communities.
